How Does Neuroplasticity Happen?
Neuroplasticity is a term used to describe the brain’s ability to change and adapt in response to experience. This means that the brain is constantly remodeling itself in response to the environment, the things we do, and the things we learn.
But how does neuroplasticity actually happen? There are a few different ways:
By forming new connections between neurons: This is how we learn new things. When we experience something new, our brains create new connections between neurons in order to encode this new information.
By strengthening existing connections: This is how we consolidate learning and create long-term memories. When we repeat an experience or practice something over and over again, the connections between neurons involved in that experience get stronger.
By pruning away unnecessary connections: This is how we weed out old, outdated information and make room for new learning. When we stop using certain connections between neurons, those connections can weaken and eventually be “pruned” away by the brain.
